How Much Does a Custom Shopify Store Cost?

Compare the work behind the quote before comparing the price.

Start with the buying decision

A Shopify project is not one standardized product. A theme configuration, a custom storefront and a complex replatform can all be called a “Shopify build,” yet involve very different work. The useful starting point is a written brief describing the customer experience, internal workflows and launch requirements. Without it, quotes can appear comparable while excluding different parts of the project.

Separate the main cost drivers

Design scope includes the number of distinct templates and the depth of customer research. Development scope includes custom behavior, theme editor controls and integrations. Migration adds data mapping, URL planning and validation. Content production, product photography and legal review may sit outside the development quote. Ask each agency to state what it includes and who supplies the remaining inputs.

Choose a theme approach deliberately

Adapting an existing theme can be appropriate when it already supports your merchandising model. A custom theme may be justified when repeated compromises affect product storytelling, usability or editor efficiency. The right question is not which approach sounds more premium, but which one meets your requirements with an acceptable maintenance burden. Ask to see how future campaigns and product changes will be handled.

Budget beyond launch

Platform subscriptions, apps, payment processing and ongoing support are separate from the initial build. Integrations can also require monitoring and maintenance. Confirm who handles defects, new requests and platform changes after launch, and what counts as work outside the original scope. A smaller initial quote can become expensive if essential operational work is left undefined.

Compare proposals using the same checklist

Request a template list, deliverables, assumptions, responsibilities, milestones and acceptance criteria. Ask how the agency handles content delays, scope changes, analytics and redirects. For a migration, require a clear data-transfer plan and launch process. Evaluate relevant work and communication quality alongside cost; headline promises about revenue or speed are not a substitute for a credible delivery plan.

Prepare a brief that gets a useful estimate

Include your current URL, catalog size, key markets, installed apps, integrations and desired launch window. Explain the business problem and the constraints your team cannot change. A well-defined brief helps an agency identify tradeoffs and offer a practical recommendation. Kartlyx scopes projects from these requirements rather than presenting one universal price for every store.
